Analysis

Reading the map

The documented positions point to a consistent line. He favours economic relief and fewer obligations for farms, voluntary or market-based approaches over taxes and bans in nutrition policy, and transparency measures, such as cameras and labels, over production bans in animal welfare. He also wants to defend German farm structures in EU negotiations.

Supporters see a pragmatic, practice-oriented agenda rooted in his own business experience. Critics see a policy that favours established agricultural interests over environmental, health and animal-welfare goals. The arguments are set out on Criticism & Controversies.
